State whether arteries carry blood towards or away from the heart and then give two features of arteries relating to this role

There are 3 major types of blood vessels
  • Arteries
  • Veins
  • Capillaries
Arteries are those blood vessels that are responsible for carrying blood away from the heart. On the other hand veins are responsible for carrying blood towards the heart.
Arteries  receive high pressure blood directly from the heart therefore they should be strong enough to resist that pressure that is why they have thicker walls and that are also elastic in nature. They also have narrow lumen. As the blood entering arteries has high pressure so there is no need for valves in arteries.
