To score target bands in IELTS, your performance in all sections of the test counts and matters. IELTS speaking test is of almost 11-15 minutes which you can take either before the writing test or a week later. These options are the same for both General Training and Academic Test. An examiner takes the IELTS speaking test, and you have to answer various types of questions face-to-face. The IELTS speaking part is designed to test your grammar, sentence structure, fluency, pronunciation, accent, and vocabulary.
Most candidates find it hard, but it is not tricky or difficult to clear like other speaking tests. All you have to do is prepare yourself to speak fluently and confidently on various topics with an IELTS examiner. And to help you discover the IELTS speaking test topics and sample questions, we have made this guide for you!
IELTS Speaking Sections
The IELTS speaking test is taken in sections, or you may call them part. They are three in total, and all of them evaluate your ability to communicate in English and figure out whether you can survive in an English-speaking country or not.
Just like other IELTS sections, its speaking test also takes place at a testing center. Don’t worry about the examiner! IELTS administrators have always hired experienced, professional, calm, and super-friendly examiners who ensure that candidates feel at ease and confident while answering questions. They make sure you talk as much as you can within a time duration of 11 to 15 minutes.
Below is the brief description of the IELTS speaking test’s sub parts or sections:
First Part
The first part of the speaking test is also known as the Interview with the examiner, and it is completely about you, your lifestyle, country, work, hobbies, and other everyday things. The time duration of the first part is 4 – 5 minutes.
Second Part
It is sometimes known as ‘the talk’ or ‘long turn’ part of the speaking test. In this section, you will have a face-to-face talk with the examiner for almost 3 – 4 minutes. Know that all parts of the IELTS speaking test take place at the same place or room and with the same examiner.
In the second part or section of the IELTS, the examiner will give you a topic card, pen and paper, and a minute to prepare the speaking topic. You will have only 1 minute to prepare notes, and once the time is over, the examiner will let you know. Make sure to write enough points to talk freely for 1 – 2 minutes. The topic varies from person to person; however, they are mostly about you and your experiences.
Third Part
If you are good at two-way discussion, this part of the speaking test allows you to speak up. The examiner will ask questions based on the topic you covered in the second part of the speaking test. You have to express your ideas, give opinions, and explain everything with examples to make sense.
The questions and discussion will last for 4 to 5 minutes. So, be mentally prepared for explanations while making points in part two of the speaking test.
Here is a table of IELTS speaking test parts:

Question Type
Allotted Time
1.
Introduction
4 to 5 minutes
2.
Individual Long Turn/The Talk
