Master's in Classical Literature and Latin
I have been teaching Latin to students who follow the IB curriculum for 20 years. I have helped students learn Latin, from ancient Rome to the language's details. Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to teach students from different backgrounds. Each student has their own reasons for studying Latin and brings their own unique perspectives. My teaching style has been influenced by my experiences, which have made it more inclusive and effective.
My approach to teaching Latin is all about connecting it to everyday life. We explore how Latin roots and phrases are still used in modern languages, including English. By making these connections, Latin becomes relevant and accessible. From scientific terms to legal jargon, Latin is all around us. You'll see it's not just a historical language but one that still influences our world today.
As an adult who is going back to school to take a class, I'm glad I picked Reggie as my teacher. I really appreciate how patient he is with me and how gradually he works, which helps me a lot. Under his careful and steady guidance, I'm sure my Latin will improve a lot. Five stars.
Reggie is a clear, kind, and well-organized teacher. He leads students through the modules in a way that makes sense and checks their learning as they go. I'm really loving the lessons, and getting better. I have no doubts about recommending him.
Master's in Classical Studies
During my 12 years as an educator, I have focused on teaching Latin to my students. I have been focused on the IB curriculum for the past seven years because it has challenging requirements. I have met many students who are interested in different things, like ancient cultures or learning Latin for its language difficulties. Each year, new people come with different ideas and questions, which makes me change and improve as a teacher. It's nice to see students progress from saying simple Latin phrases to having detailed conversations about Roman history, thanks to their new language skills.
To me, Latin is not only a language, but also a way to travel back in time. I try to teach students both language and culture. I start by teaching basic grammar and vocabulary to make sure every student feels confident in their fundamental skills. Then, we move on to more challenging readings and interpretations. As we learn more about the language, we also learn about the Romans and their literature, art, and philosophy. My lessons are engaging and involve talking, sharing ideas, and working together on projects. I think it's best to learn a language by speaking it, even if it's a 'dead' language like Latin. In my classes, students are encouraged to talk, act out scenes from plays, and write their own short stories in Latin.I use a mix of regular textbooks and online resources to make sure my students can use different materials. Also, I often give them extra materials such as videos, podcasts, and articles that give a modern view on old texts. Students should understand how historical language relates to their lives today.
Mila is a great teacher. She is lively, and the lessons are fun. Anyone can ask her a question, and she is happy to answer them. She also makes great decisions about what to teach people who want to learn Latin. I would suggest this to anyone who wants to learn seriously.
Mila has been teaching Latin to both of my sons for their IB exams. An excellent tutor who is clear in their explanations and gets right to the point. Very pleased with how things have been going thus far.
Master's in Classical Literature
My teaching journey has been 8 years long, and Latin has been a central part of it. I have been teaching different age groups, with a special focus on the IB curriculum, for the past five years. I have had a variety of students, from people who really enjoy learning languages to those who are just taking the class because they have to. Every student, with their different backgrounds and motivations, has taught me something new, which has helped me improve my teaching approach. I am happy to see that many of my students have continued studying classics or have found creative ways to use their Latin skills.
Teaching Latin involves understanding the language's structure and connecting to its heritage. I have two main ways of teaching: first, making sure you understand the basics really well, and second, showing you how the lessons apply to the real world. I want to make learning more relatable and interesting by using stories, historical events, and Latin-rooted words in modern languages. In my class, we not only study Latin, but we also experience it firsthand.
Mr. Owen's approach to Latin is different from anything I've experienced. He doesn't just teach, he narrates. Every lesson is a new story!
Luke has been quite helpful overall. He is good at explaining things, and I've definitely improved my Latin skills. However, sometimes he can be a bit too strict with deadlines, which can be stressful.
