PhD in Physics from the University of Oxford
I am Connor Lacroix. After completing my PhD in Physics from the University of Oxford, I embarked on a rewarding teaching journey that has spanned over two decades. I started as a lecturer at Northwood University, where I taught advanced physics courses for nearly seven years. My interest in nuclear physics led me to collaborate with research teams at Oxford, and I've co-authored several papers on particle interactions. In the last 14 years, I've been teaching A-level physics at Hillcrest High, helping students bridge the gap between high school and university-level physics. Additionally, I've conducted workshops at national and international physics conferences, ensuring I remain updated with the latest in the field.
My teaching method is straightforward: make physics relatable. I believe in breaking down complex theories into digestible bits using everyday examples. This approach not only makes the subject less intimidating but also shows its applicability in our daily lives. In my lessons, I integrate demonstrations, experiments, and discussions to keep students engaged. Regular quizzes help in assessing understanding, and I always allocate time for revision, ensuring that the students are well-prepared for their exams. Open communication is encouraged, and I am always available to address any doubts or provide extra help when needed.
Connor’s teaching style is unlike any I've encountered. There's a clear emphasis on experiential learning, which can be interesting. However, after three months, I felt like we barely scratched the surface of the syllabus. The sessions sometimes felt more like science appreciation rather than rigorous A-level prep.
I appreciate the depth he goes into, but sometimes it feels a bit too much for a single session. Still, I've learned a lot!
MSc in Biochemistry from University of Cambridge
Over my 19-year teaching career, I've dedicated myself to not just teaching science, but igniting a passion for it in my students. My first teaching job was in a rural school, where I had limited resources but endless curiosity from my students. This environment taught me to be innovative and make the most out of every situation. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working in different educational settings, city schools to private tutoring. Each of these experiences has enriched my teaching style and given me valuable insights into student needs, especially those preparing for A-levels.
I prioritize helping my students understand how each topic is interconnected. Hands-on experiments, real-life applications, and discussions form a significant part of my teaching. While I teach the subject, I always ensure my lessons are relatable and relevant to real-world scenarios. Especially for A-level students, I focus on honing their analytical skills and critical thinking, preparing them not only for exams but for future studies and professions.
Being dyslexic, I've struggled with science. Elloe used audio-visual tools, making lessons more digestible. It's a different approach. More visual aids would be even better!
She's enthusiastic, but sometimes too much. We once spent an entire lesson on just one concept. Wish there was a better balance.
MSc in Molecular Biology from University of Cambridge
After completing my master's, my journey began in a small college where I taught young scientists. Over the past 15 years, I've had the privilege to work at top institutions like Westbridge Academy and Greenfield College. During my time at Westbridge, I led a team to initiate a research program for students, allowing them to get hands-on experience in molecular biology experiments. Several of our projects have been recognized at national science fairs. Apart from classroom teaching, I've also been involved in curriculum development and have been a guest speaker at numerous biology seminars across the country.
Science is about inquiry and curiosity. While textbooks provide the basics, I believe in making my students think beyond the pages. o facilitate this, I often bring current scientific articles and case studies into the classroom, promoting discussions and critical thinking. Additionally, I use interactive models and lab sessions to provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. Continuous assessment is key, and I implement regular tests to gauge student progress. My door is always open for students who need extra clarification or wish to study more.
Having Carter as a tutor has been a game-changer for my son. He was on the verge of dropping science, but he reignited his passion. I was particularly impressed when he took the time to relate cellular biology to his favorite video game, making the lessons engaging. It's one thing to teach, but it's another to truly connect with students. Carter does both wonderfully.
Carter's real-world examples truly help in understanding the complex topics. However, his classes can sometimes run over time due to long discussions.
MSc in Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
I began my career in a progressive urban school, where the emphasis was on real-world application. Here, I led many project-based learning modules that enhanced students' understanding of fundamental physics concepts. I’ve also taken roles in curriculum development, ensuring the content is both challenging and engaging. Collaborating with fellow educators and participating in several workshops has further broadened my teaching horizon, specifically for students targeting A-levels.
Physics, in essence, explains the world around us. In my classes, I endeavor to bridge the gap between textbook theories and their real-world manifestations. I regularly incorporate practical demonstrations and simulations to make concepts easily understandable. For A-level aspirants, my focus leans heavily on building a strong conceptual foundation while simultaneously developing their problem-solving abilities. Regular assessments, feedback sessions, and tailored strategies for each student ensure they are exam-ready and conceptually sound.
