Master's in Mandarin Linguistics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University
I started learning Mandarin when I was young because my Chinese neighbour taught me. I became interested in Mandarin Linguistics and decided to study it further at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. During my 22 years of teaching, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of students. This includes international students as well as professionals who need to learn Mandarin for their jobs. I use a mix of formal language techniques and everyday expressions to make Mandarin more lively.
To really understand Mandarin, you need to comprehend the essence of the language. I focus on practical use of Mandarin, so that students can feel comfortable speaking it in any situation. I study and analyze complex characters and sentences. I use the IB curriculum to teach Mandarin. I also include things like podcasts, news broadcasts, and modern literature to help students understand Mandarin in different ways. This helps them understand both the history and current use of the language.
Michael is charming and kind; he makes me feel at ease despite my mistakes and is an excellent teacher of sentence construction. He's also really patient with me if I usually forget one of these forms.
I love the role-playing exercises! They've made me more confident in conversational Mandarin.
PhD in East Asian Studies from Peking University
I began working as an English teacher in Beijing 20 years ago. During that time, I had the opportunity to connect with people from different cultures and build friendships despite the challenges of language differences. I started loving Mandarin more, so I decided to pursue a PhD. I now focus on teaching Mandarin and sharing the beauty of Chinese culture in my career. I have worked with IB students for a long time, helping them get ready for IB exams. I have seen many of them go from being beginners to becoming fluent speakers. I have experience teaching at different types of schools and doing private tutoring. This has influenced the way I teach, as I always consider the unique needs of my students.
I use a well-rounded approach. I teach students about Chinese literature, history, and pop culture, in addition to the language. This method helps students understand how to use language and its cultural meaning more effectively. I like to involve everyone in my lessons, so I often have discussions, tell stories, and analyse films. I focus on helping IB students become confident in speaking Mandarin, writing essays, and understanding texts with cultural awareness.
I choose to study Mandarin with my 12-year-old daughter. Since we have been taking lessons with Sophie for a year, I have had the opportunity to think about how she instructs both adults and kids. Sophie is a devoted and highly inspiring teacher. She sends out additional material after the lesson if we ask for any additional information. The lessons follow a clear format. For my classes, I'm use HSK1 books. My daughter initially used flash cards and has since added text books. I'm really pleased with Sophie , and I wholeheartedly endorse her as a Mandarin tutor for both children and adults.
Sophie's teaching methods are unique and enjoyable. But sometimes I wish we could have more grammar sessions.

Master's in Intercultural Communication
I started learning Mandarin when I was in Beijing for an exchange programme. This visit was supposed to be a few months long but ended up lasting a couple of years. I became very interested in the language and culture, so I started studying Mandarin and learning about its social and cultural aspects. After I came back, I got a degree in Intercultural Communication. For the last 18 years, I have been helping students learn Mandarin and teaching them about Chinese culture. I have enjoyed teaching students from different backgrounds, helping them become skilled in both the language and understanding China's diverse culture.
Improving reading skills is important for studying A-level Mandarin. In my classes, we read different types of texts like newspapers, books, and things we find on the internet. Reading a lot helps you learn new words and understand what you read better. Students learn how to read and understand different types of writing in Mandarin. This helps them feel more comfortable when reading various texts in Mandarin. Being able to read well is important because it helps students do well on tests and use language in everyday life.
Olivia is a great teacher, and I'm glad I was able to find her for our son. His A's show how good of a teacher she is. Good experience so far!
Her lessons offer a blend of traditional and modern Chinese culture. It's truly a rewarding experience.
PhD in East Asian Studies
I have been teaching Mandarin for almost 20 years because I love the Chinese language and its rich culture. During my PhD research, I lived in Beijing and focused on studying language. I learned a lot about everyday Mandarin and different dialects spoken in the region. During my time as a teacher, I have been lucky to work with many different groups of students. Each group has had their own unique challenges, which has helped me improve my teaching methods. I focus on helping GCSE students by focusing on the basics. I believe that if they understand the fundamentals well, they can easily learn more advanced concepts later on.
Teaching Mandarin involves sharing both the language and the culture. I try to make my lessons interesting by including things about Chinese history, traditions, and even modern pop culture. Talking about popular Chinese songs or trending TV shows can help you remember the characters and phrases more effectively than just memorizing them. It is important to apply what you learn, so I suggest starting to speak in Mandarin right away. In my classes, we do activities like pretending to be someone else, practicing conversations, and talking with classmates. This helps students feel more comfortable talking in real-life situations.
Thank you William, for being such a great and gentle teacher. I'm learning a lot. Before, I was only learning with an app, but his lessons have helped me quickly improve my tone and speech.
It's great that Willaim is back to work. His way of teaching is great for beginners like me because it has a good mix of organized lessons and open conversation. Looking forward to having him teach me again.
Master's in Mandarin Studies
During my 16 years of teaching, I have taught students from different backgrounds. Each student has their own challenges and perspectives when learning Mandarin. At the beginning of my career, I spent three important years in Shanghai. During that time, I improved my Mandarin language abilities and had a strong connection with the diverse Chinese culture. Using my past experience, I incorporated cultural aspects into my Mandarin lessons. This has helped me give students a complete understanding of both the language and the culture it represents. I think it's helpful to use stories, cultural practices, and historical contexts when teaching GCSE students. It can make it easier for them to understand and learn languages.
For students looking to use Mandarin in a professional context, I offer a specialized business-oriented approach. We focus on Mandarin used in the business world, covering topics like negotiations, presentations, and cross-cultural communication. This approach equips students with the language and cultural knowledge needed to thrive in a Mandarin-speaking business environment.
Miss Rebecca is very professional, and she is a great teacher, especially when it comes to helping beginning or advanced students understand pronunciation issues. She tries to teach and keep the students' attention in fun and different ways, which I like. She gives comments to help kids learn how to do better :)
Rebecca's classes are truly unique. I've never been so invested in a language before.
Master's in Chinese Language and Culture
I started learning Mandarin when I took a year off after college to travel in China. I was captivated by the long history, lively cities, peaceful landscapes, and the charm of the language. This made me spend many years learning Mandarin, both spoken and written. In the last 16 years, I have been fortunate to teach at different schools and colleges. I have learned a lot about how people learn in different ways from these teaching experiences. I have helped students get ready for their A-level exams, supported adults with their professional communication, and advised travellers on how to have a great trip to China.
Every student has unique strengths and areas for improvement. In my A-level Mandarin classes, I adopt an individualized learning approach. I assess each student's proficiency level and change the lessons to address their specific needs. Whether a student requires extra help with speaking, writing, or grammar, I provide personalized guidance. This approach ensures that each student can progress at their own pace and receive the support they need to excel in A-level Mandarin.
I absolutely love my Mandarin class! The teacher is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also makes learning fun and engaging. The lessons are well-structured, with a perfect balance of speaking, listening, and writing activities. I've seen tremendous progress in my language skills, and I'm excited to keep learning.

Master's in Chinese Linguistics
I have been teaching Mandarin for 12 years and I have found that using both traditional teaching methods and modern language tools is enjoyable and effective. I worked as a teacher in Beijing when I first began teaching. I worked with people who speak Mandarin as their first language and learned how to say and speak Mandarin accurately. When I came back to the UK, I began using these practical experiences in my teaching method. I have made plans to assist GCSE students who speak English in overcoming the difficulties they encounter while learning Mandarin, which has different sounds.
Although Mandarin's structure may appear difficult initially, I find it helpful to break it down into smaller, understandable parts. I teach lessons that focus on a specific topic. During these lessons, I cover vocabulary, grammar, and tones in the context of everyday situations or themes. This helps people understand and connect with them better. I focus on listening exercises to help students understand the rhythm and flow of the language. I use technology, such as language apps and online platforms, to help students practice at their own speed and in a way that feels comfortable for them. This helps them reinforce what they have learned during our sessions.
Very good teacher! In every class, Olivia really helps me with how I say words and how to use them. If you want to learn Mandarin, she is the best teacher you can find. Interactive lessons and different ways to teach are also great.
Olivia's approach to teaching Mandarin is both innovative and grounded. Loved the experience
PhD in East Asian Linguistics
In the last twelve years, I have taught Mandarin to students with different backgrounds, ages, and levels of skill. I started my journey as a student in China, where I fell in love with the language and decided to become a teacher. I have worked with schools, universities, and private institutions to gain more knowledge and skills. One of the best parts of my journey has been helping people who are not from China and are moving there for work. I assist them with learning the language and getting used to the culture.
To become really good at Mandarin, it's important to know the culture it comes from. In my Mandarin classes, we learn about Chinese traditions, history, art, and modern life. By learning about Chinese culture, students can gain a deeper understanding of Mandarin that goes beyond just vocabulary and grammar. This method helps people learn languages and also helps them understand and appreciate China's culture.
Charlotte's method of teaching Mandarin is refreshing! Her focus on conversational skills had me speaking confidently in a short time.
Charlotte'sclasses are informative and enjoyable.. I had a great time working with her! She is nice, gentle, and very supportive, which really pushed me to keep learning the language. She had a lot of lessons ready, and we went through them together to figure out my ability to read and other things. I value how organized and concerned she was about the curriculum. For example, we did reading tasks together and went over the words I had trouble with in detail. You should learn Chinese with Charlotte for sure!
Master's in Mandarin Linguistics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University
I started learning Mandarin when I went to Shanghai for a college exchange program. The busy streets and peaceful tea houses made me realize that language is important for understanding a culture. After completing my Master's degree at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, I came back to my home country to teach Mandarin. In the last 12 years, I have taught different groups of people. Some were high school students getting ready for their IB exams, and others were professionals from companies who wanted to expand their global presence. I have learned to change my teaching methods to fit different ways of learning and goals.
In my classes, we prioritize practicality. I focus on teaching Mandarin phrases and vocabulary that are immediately applicable to real-life situations. Whether you're ordering food, traveling, or engaging in everyday conversations, you'll gain the language skills you need to navigate these scenarios confidently.
My son loves the IB Mandarin lessons that Samuel has been giving him. He says Samuel moves him a lot. Really knows a lot about everything, always comes to class ready, and is very organized. That's great that you found him. I'm excited to keep seeing my son's growth in Mandarin.
Samuel is a superb tutor. Because he reassures, supports, and lets my son think creatively, my son is actually beginning to like Mandarin more. I recommend Samuel to friends and family.
