I have been studying post-colonial narratives and how literature from English-speaking countries has been received and understood in Asia. When we read Jane Austen, we will talk about the rules and expectations of society during her time. When we learn about George Orwell, we will talk about the political situations he was responding to. But I also want to consider: How might people from Eastern cultures see these works? How do different cultures affect how we understand a story or character? In my classes, I want students to actively participate in the conversation of literature. I encourage them to connect their own backgrounds and perspectives to the larger discussion happening in the literary world.
